Press Release 27 March, 2023

Cardiac surgeon Ulf Kjellman, who recently joined Realheart's medical advisory board, has now agreed to become the company's Chief Medical Officer (CMO). Kjellman, who has many years of experience in advanced cardiac surgery, will be clinically responsible for the company's preclinical and clinical studies.

"I feel incredibly confident that Ulf Kjellman takes over as medical director and thus assumes clinical responsibility. I will continue as head of innovation with room to focus even more on the continued development of Realheart's entire planned product line, mainly a smaller version of Realheart suitable for women and smaller patients," said company founder Azad Najar.

Ulf Kjellman has over 35 years of experience in cardiac and thoracic surgery. His experience includes a deep involvement in initiating and developing programs for heart transplantation and heart pump treatments at several hospitals, both in Sweden and in other countries, most recently at the National Guard Hospital Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.

“It was an easy decision for me to take on the role as Chief Medical Officer at Realheart. Realheart's TAH is an extremely interesting concept and a paradigm shift in artificial hearts. As a product, it fills a gap in the care of heart failure patients with the potential to save tens of thousands of lives within a decade," said Ulf Kjellman.

Kjellman was one of the first to implant both HeartMate 2 and HeartMate 3, after CE marking. (left ventricular assist devices developed by Abbott). He was also the cardiac surgeon who performed the first implantation of the SynCardia artificial heart in Sweden and Scandinavia in 2008. Kjellman has published several scientific articles on cardiovascular diseases in general and on heart pumps specifically. Thanks to his professional experience, Ulf Kjellman has a large network of contacts among potential customers, suppliers, and partners in Sweden, Europe, and the Middle East.

“We are extremely happy and proud that Ulf Kjellman chooses to step into the role of Chief Medical Officer. Although his expertise has been available to us for some time, it is now even clearer what an important role he will play in our continued development. Dr Kjellman will be a very valuable addition to the management team, where he brings extensive experience in cardiac surgery and transplantation. This in turn will be of great importance for our future clinical trials when patients will receive Realheart® TAH," said Ina Laura Perkins, CEO of Realheart.

Jonas Caspari Bark New CFO at Realheart

Press release 27 June, 2022

Realheart has recruited Jonas Caspari Bark as its new Chief Financial Officer. He joins Realheart from a similar position with Ecokraft Sverige AB and has previously, among other things, worked in various roles within the ABB group. Jonas Caspari Bark starts on August 5.

Realheart is a Swedish company, headquartered in Västerås, that is developing the world's first artificial four-chamber heart. The company has recently taken several important steps forward, not least in leaving the prototype behind and now testing the clinical version of the heart in animal studies, with clinical trials expected to begin in 2024. As a result of this, interest in the company is increasing, and with it the need to further strengthen the finance function.

''I am so pleased to have been able to add Jonas Caspari Bark to our team when our current CFO Andreas Hultdin cannot be available to the extent we need going forward. He has been extremely important to Realheart and it is thanks to his skill and commitment that Jonas can now take over a finance function with well-structured and secure procedures and develop it further'' said Ina Laura Perkins, CEO.

Andreas Hultdin will leave his role on 5 August when Jonas Caspari Bark takes over, but Andreas will remain as a consultant to support the company as needed.

''Realheart's artificial heart is a super exciting product that will help save a lot of lives in the future. I am really looking forward to being involved in the work towards commercialisation. I have previous experience of getting onboard at this phase of the development process and hope to be able to contribute to our success, says Jonas Caspari Bark.

Dr Ina Laura Perkins new CEO of Realheart

After 8 years as CEO of Realheart, founder Azad Najar hands over the leadership to Dr Ina Laura Perkins, who has been Chief Scientific Officer at the company since 2017.

On March 15, Dr Ina Laura Perkins will shoulder the role as CEO of Realheart, thus taking over the leadership of the Västerås company and its development of an artificial heart.

Ina Laura has two master's degrees, in biomedicine, and in innovation and entrepreneurship. In 2010, she won The Prince of Wales Innovation Scholarship for her stem cell work and received her PhD in 2015 from Swansea University Medical School. In 2019, Ina Laura completed an Executive MBA in financial management at The Stockholm School of Economics.

Ina Laura has worked with medical innovations throughout her career. Before joining Realheart in 2017, she was involved in the start-up of The Nobel Prize winner Sir Martin Evans' stem cell company Celixir and worked as Head of Research at Calon Cardio-Technology with the development of a new left-chamber assist device.

“Gaining the board's confidence to lead Realheart into the exciting times ahead is very honourable. Throughout my career, I have made a conscious decision to broaden my skills to be ready to take on a CEO role. Thanks to Azad's innovation and business abilities, it is now a fantastic company I am set to manage. My immediate focus will be to strengthen the organization with more employees so that we can keep a steady pace forward towards clinical trials ", says incoming CEO Ina Laura Perkins.

After the handover, Azad Najar will take on the role of Chief Medical and Innovation Officer and will be responsible for animal studies and the company's innovations.

“Already from being a company with few people, I have constantly worked to develop the competence in Realheart and recruit highly skilled people. Now I can look back and proudly say that we have a good organization with very competent staff. The work with preclinical animal testing is growing and requires great focus in the future. We also need to be at the forefront of innovations in heart failure treatment to achieve our vision “no one should have to die of heart failure". I therefore need to free up more time to work with these two important areas in the company. We have been planning for a long time for Ina Laura to take over the role of CEO. She will be an excellent CEO with her wise leadership, her enormous competence and her large industry network ", comments outgoing CEO Azad Najar.
